Zoreh Jooya was born in Mashhad, in Eastern Iran. Her father is from Afghanistan and her mother from Iran. She studied classic music in Vienna, where she currently lives and dedicates herself in particular to the interpretation of oriental music. Her albums offer a view over her musical programs. “Songs from Afghanistan” includes both ancient traditional chants and Ghazal, love songs, besides Qawwali, religious chants, also well known in India and Pakistan. The music is played with classic Afghan instrument such as the robad, the damburre and the tabla. Zohreh Jooya has strong ties to her homeland and she regrets that the fundamentalist interpretation of Islam forbids women to perform on a stage. However, her experience in Europe is more than positive. .The singer says: “here, the audience is open, people are quite interested in music of other cultures . And there are organizations supporting international music projects”. For Zoreh Jooya, international music is the music of the future.
